Lucky Hit is one of the oldest of the important houses in historic Clarke County. Built in 1791 by Richard Kidder Meade, it is located south of Route 50 in a beautiful area of the county, surrounded by large farms, and across from the 400 acre State Arboretum of Viginia. The views to the east and south are of mountains and rolling fields: to the west is the village of White Post, where a survey marker was placed by a young George Washington when he surveyed the area. The larger parcel is open and flat, and would make a great location for a horse facility.
The original house is built of brick, with 16 ft. ceilings, all the original doors and molding, original floors, eight wood-burning fireplaces, of which seven are usable, all in excellent condition. The rooms are classically proportioned, with a balance between formality and warmth. A screened porch was added across the rear, and it has been recently glassed in for year-round use. A 1947 brick addition to the west side houses the kitchen, two bedrooms upstairs, and a 2 car garage below. The basement is fully finished with the old floor joists exposed.
